$250,000 Facebook competition

Expedia.com.au, the world’s largest online travel company, has recently launched FriendTrips, a six-week Facebook competition on its Australian Facebook page - www.facebook.com/expedia.com.au. The competition will give away a total of $250,000 worth of holidays, making it one of the biggest Facebook travel competitions in Australia ever.

The competition follows the success of the campaign in the US. Expedia.com.au partnered with airlines and tourism boards such as Tourism Thailand, Visit Argentina, Banff Lake Louise, California Travel and Tourism Chile to offer Australians six one-of-a-kind holidays for six winners (plus five friends), worth up to $50,000 each to Chile, Argentina, Thailand, Hawaii, California or Canada. A user simply ‘pilots’ a plane to any of the aforementioned destinations and needs to invite five unique Facebook friends in order to enter the competition. People can enter as many times as they wish, as long as each time they invite five unique new friends.

Expedia.com.au is supporting FriendTrips with online and press advertising. The six-week campaign will also be supported by PR activities, including research and media releases that look at the good, bad and ugly characteristics of travelling partners and the celebrities that Australians would most like to sit next to on a plane.

The competition commenced on Tuesday, 30 August and will conclude on Sunday 9 October. It has already proven popular with many Australians, with Expedia Australia and New Zealand experiencing more than double new Facebook fans since the competition started less than three weeks ago.
