Younger working Australians have been revealed to be more holiday deprived and fearful of taking all their annual leave than their older compatriots, according to the latest annual global Vacation Deprivation® survey from Expedia®, the world’s largest online travel company.
Younger Australians (i.e. those aged between 18 and 34) are twice as likely not to take all their annual leave as they feel that if they take time off to go on holiday they will miss an important decision at work. While Expedia.com.au continues to lead the campaign against fees, some online travel agents (OTAs) in Australia continue to charge customers fees of up to $50 to book a flight. They also charge various fees to change/cancel a flight, hotel or package.
Research* commissioned by Expedia late last year found that almost three quarters of Australians are angered when websites charge fees and believe they should not be charged.

New research from Expedia.com.auTM, operated by Expedia, Inc., the world’s largest online travel company, shows that when it comes to taking short breaks, most Australians look no further than their own state. The survey*, conducted among 1,000 Australians, showed that while almost nine out of ten respondents are planning a short break this year, the vast majority (69%) of those will choose to do so within their own state borders rather than looking further afield. And while over a third (36%) of respondents are willing to travel over four hours by car, train or bus to reach their short-break destination, only a few (22%) chose to fly irrespective of where they short-break.
