Aussies – no longer beach bums?

Expedia Fly and Flop report reveals beach vacation habits  

  • Aussies prefer historical/ cultural sightseeing to beach holiday
  • Buying a new outfit, working out and dieting top pre-beach preparation
  • Spring is most popular travel season – contrary to global trend

Aussies are bucking the global preference for beach holidays (34%), instead listing historical/ cultural sightseeing vacations as their preferred holiday (37% vs 28% globally), according to Expedia’s annual Fly and Flop report.

The global survey, commissioned by the world’s largest online travel company, lifts the lid on beach holiday habits around the world and also reveals that Aussies favour international beach destinations to domestic ones, spending an average AUD$2,001-AUD$3,000 on their holidays.

Amee Evans, Expedia travel expert said: “It’s not surprising that with some of the world’s best beaches at our doorstep, spoilt Australians are keen for a different kind of travel experience and are choosing to explore destinations steeped in culture and history. Luckily for us, the two aren’t mutually exclusive.”

When we go and why

Still not content with following the global tendency for summer travel (52%),  Personal recommendations and word of mouth are the most influential sources for travel information (45%), though value is still a key factor, with one third of respondents choosing a beach holiday destination based on last minute package deals. Australians also prefer to book their travel online (64%), slightly above the global average of 60%.

“Savvy travellers are saving even more money and time by booking their beach holidays online. And by combining flight and hotel bookings, they’ll save even more, leaving them with more cash to spend at the destination,” said Ms Evans.

Passing the time

Australians have also revealed themselves to be image-conscious, with more than a quarter of respondents investing more than $150 getting ‘beach ready’. The top beach preparations include: investing in a new outfit (32%), working out (21%), and dieting (20%).

Once at the beach, holidaymakers are split between laidback and active pursuits, with walking (83%), swimming (67%) and reading (46%) the three most popular activities; the top off-beach activities are eating local cuisine, exploring cultural sites and shopping.

“Though Australians are generally an active bunch, ultimately, holidays are about taking time away to relax with our friends, family and loved ones. Expedia makes it easy to find travel inspiration and deals that allow you to get out there and explore the world,” said Ms Evans.
